Airbnb Turns to AI Search and Social Tools, Adds Meal Delivery and Laundry
Apps·September 30, 2026
Airbnb is widening its ambitions beyond booking a place to sleep. The company is introducing AI-driven search and a set of social features, and it is also launching extra services such as meal delivery and laundry in a limited number of locations.
The AI search upgrade is meant to change how guests look for stays. Instead of relying only on filters for dates, price and location, travelers can describe what they want in more natural terms and let the system surface listings that fit. It is a familiar direction for travel platforms, which have been racing to use generative AI to cut down the time people spend scrolling through results.
The social additions point to a different goal: making the app something people open before and during a trip, not just at the moment of checkout. Features that let users connect, share and plan with others give Airbnb more reasons to keep travelers inside its ecosystem instead of sending them to outside apps and messaging threads.
The new services are arguably the most tangible change for guests. Meal delivery and laundry are everyday needs that hotels have long handled through room service and front desk offerings. By offering them in select places, Airbnb is trying to close the convenience gap between a home rental and a hotel stay, particularly for longer trips where clean clothes and easy meals matter more.
Airbnb has not made these services available everywhere. The limited rollout suggests the company is testing demand and logistics before deciding how far to expand. Running consistent services across a huge and varied network of independent hosts is a hard operational problem, and quality can vary from one market to the next.
Taken together, the moves show Airbnb positioning itself as a broader travel platform rather than a pure listings marketplace. Whether guests embrace AI search, social planning and add-on services will determine how much of that vision sticks. For now, the company is placing bets in several areas at once, and the select-location approach lets it learn what travelers actually use.
