AMD Buys Fei-Fei Li's World Labs for $8.2 Billion, Adding a Star AI Scientist to Its Ranks

AMD is making its boldest AI bet yet, agreeing to acquire World Labs, the startup founded by renowned computer scientist Fei-Fei Li, for $8.2 billion. As part of the deal, Li will join AMD directly, taking on the newly created role of executive vice president and chief scientist.

World Labs, which Li launched in 2024 after stepping away from full-time teaching at Stanford, has focused on what she calls "spatial intelligence": AI systems that can perceive, reason about, and generate three-dimensional environments rather than just text or flat images. The startup drew outsized attention and funding despite operating largely under wraps, riding on Li's reputation as one of the architects of modern AI. She built ImageNet, the massive labeled image dataset that helped ignite the deep learning boom of the 2010s, and later co-founded Stanford's Human-Centered AI Institute.

For AMD, the acquisition is as much about talent and positioning as it is about technology. The company has spent recent years trying to close the gap with Nvidia in AI chips, and pairing its hardware roadmap with a scientist of Li's stature signals an ambition to shape where AI models are headed next, not just supply the silicon underneath them. Spatial intelligence is increasingly viewed as a critical building block for robotics, autonomous systems, and immersive computing, areas where demand for specialized chips and tightly integrated software is expected to grow sharply.

The price tag also underscores how aggressively established tech companies are paying to secure both AI research talent and the infrastructure needed to compete in generative and embodied AI. Li's move mirrors a broader pattern of chipmakers and hyperscalers absorbing well-funded AI labs and their leadership rather than competing with them from the outside, following similar high-profile hires and acquisitions across the industry.

Terms of the deal beyond the $8.2 billion price were not disclosed. AMD did not immediately detail how World Labs' technology and team will be folded into its existing product lines, though the appointment of Li as chief scientist suggests the startup's research will inform AMD's broader AI strategy rather than operate as a standalone unit.
