Meta Puts Its Muse AI Agent to Work for Small Businesses

Meta is bringing its AI agent, Muse, to small businesses, betting that owners short on time and staff will hand routine work to software.

The company says the agent can help owners run their operations and find new customers. Meta has not framed it as a simple chatbot. Muse is presented as an agent, meaning a tool meant to take on tasks instead of only answering questions.

The move fits a clear pattern. Meta already earns most of its money from advertising, and small and midsize firms make up a large share of that customer base. An assistant that helps those firms decide what to promote, whom to target and how to respond to customers gives Meta a new way to keep them inside its apps and ad tools.

For business owners, the appeal is practical. Many run shops, salons, restaurants or online stores with little or no marketing team. Help with drafting posts, handling inquiries or spotting potential buyers could save hours each week. The open question is how well the agent performs on real, messy day-to-day work, and how much control owners keep over what it does on their behalf.

Meta's announcement leaves several details unanswered, including pricing, which markets get access first and how deeply Muse connects to Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp. Those answers will shape whether it becomes a core product or one more feature added to a crowded AI menu.

Rivals are chasing the same audience. Google, Microsoft and a host of startups are all selling AI helpers aimed at small companies, and each wants to be the tool owners rely on daily. Meta's advantage is reach, since millions of small businesses already use its platforms to talk to customers.

The risks are familiar. Automated tools can make mistakes, and a poorly worded reply or badly targeted ad can cost a small business money and goodwill. How much oversight Meta builds in, and how transparent it is about what Muse does, will matter as much as how capable the agent is.
