Reddit Pulls the Plug on RSS Feeds as It Locks Down Its Data

Platforms·October 1, 2026

Reddit is ending support for RSS feeds, removing one of the last simple ways to follow subreddits and user posts outside the platform. The company is also ending public API access, and it points to AI bots harvesting its content as the reason.

For years, RSS let readers pull new posts from a subreddit into a feed reader without opening the site or app. Third-party tools, notification bots and hobbyist dashboards relied on the same open plumbing. Closing it off means anyone who wants that data now has to go through channels Reddit controls.

The decision fits a pattern. Reddit has spent the past few years tightening access to what is arguably its most valuable asset: a huge archive of human conversation, advice and niche expertise. That archive has become prized training material for AI models. Reddit has signed paid licensing deals with AI developers, which gives it a clear commercial incentive to stop others from collecting the same material for free.

The company's argument is that open feeds and public endpoints are easy targets for automated scrapers, which can pull content at scale with little friction. Shutting those doors is a blunt but effective way to make bulk collection harder and to push serious users toward formal agreements.

The cost falls on ordinary users and small developers. RSS fans who used feeds to track a handful of communities lose a lightweight, privacy-friendly option. Moderation tool builders, accessibility projects and researchers who depended on public access face a narrower path, and many will have to rethink or abandon their work.

It also revives a familiar tension on the modern web. Platforms built on user contributions want to keep that content discoverable and engaging, but they also want to control how it is monetized. As AI companies keep hunting for high-quality text, more sites are likely to weigh the same trade-off between openness and protecting their data.

For now, Reddit users who want to keep up with their communities will have to rely on the official app and website, or on whatever sanctioned access Reddit chooses to offer.
