xAI Grabs "dot.com" Ahead of OpenAI's Dots Launch, and the Internet Sees a Troll

The rivalry between Elon Musk's xAI and OpenAI has found a new stage: a domain name.

OpenAI launched its new AI agent, called Dots, on Tuesday. But before the announcement landed, xAI had already picked up the domain "dot.com." Anyone who types it in is now redirected to the download page for Grok, xAI's chatbot.

The timing has not gone unnoticed. Social media users were quick to conclude that the redirect is a deliberate troll, a way of hijacking attention from a rival's big product moment. Neither company had offered an explanation at the time of writing, so the intent is inferred from the timing rather than confirmed.

The name is not an exact match. OpenAI's product is Dots, plural, while xAI holds the singular "dot.com." Even so, the two are close enough that a curious user searching for the new agent, or guessing at a web address, could easily end up in front of Grok instead. That is the kind of small-scale guerrilla marketing Musk has long favored, and it costs little compared with an ad campaign.

Short, common-word domains are valuable real estate, and dot.com is about as memorable as they come. Whoever paid for it, and however much, has an asset that would draw traffic on its own. Pointing it at an app download page turns that traffic into potential Grok users.

The episode fits a pattern. Musk and OpenAI have been at odds for years, spanning his early role in founding the company, his departure, and a running legal and public feud. xAI, which builds Grok and competes directly with OpenAI's products, has often used cheeky public moves to needle its rival at moments of maximum visibility.

For OpenAI, the practical damage is probably minimal. A redirect does not stop anyone from finding Dots through official channels. But it does hand xAI a bit of free buzz on a day when OpenAI wanted the conversation to be about its own product.

Whether this was a planned jab or a happy coincidence, the internet has made up its mind. Expect more of these small skirmishes as the AI agent race heats up and the companies fight for every bit of attention.
